Privet is the name given for the evergreen shrub;
Ligustrum Ovalifolium, which adorns many a British garden, and is normally used to act as a barrier or as a privacy hedge.

It is often said that the name 'privet' is related to private, although there is no real evidence to support this!
It needs to be maintained otherwise it can become a little untidy and unruly, but a well looked after privet hedge can be a good investment. It can act as a privacy screen or a windbreak, offer shelter to
wildlife and is an excellent choice for topiary specimens.
